Mambo #5

Richie & I have (mumblecough) years between us.  The only time I *ever* notice a difference from the age gap is in our taste in music.  If the words “Apache, Jump On It” mean something to you, you’re totally on Team Richie*.  If the words “Crash Into Me” mean anything to you, you’re Team Rach.  I expect the lot of you to print up t-shirts declaring your loyalty & post them on my fb page.  Just a suggestion.

Our Venn Diagram slightly overlaps at 80s new wave, 90s hair metal, the rare happy rap and Smashing Pumpkins.  So mostly we listen to Howard in the car, cause that’s the one station we completely agree on.

It’s hard!  I’m a musician!  Music is HUGELY important to me!  And when I share a song that absolutely crushes me, completely breaks my heart, it’s like sharing an intimate little piece of myself.  So when it’s met with a passive “meh”, I almost take it personally, like you’re not taking a minute to understand me better, to see why this is so important to me, to find the beauty in it.  I know, I’m weird.  Sigh.  Maybe it’s a musician thing?  The stuff that moves him is WAY old school hip hop.  Like the origins of hip hop, which I’m told is really historically important- and I’m certain he’s right.  I’m just more into where it evolved TO than the very basic beginnings that sound like the pre-programmed beats on my first casio keyboard (he’s so gonna kick my butt for saying that :))   The point is, our taste is so divergent that I literally thought about putting something in my vows about trying really hard to learn to tolerate his music.  He didn’t find that so cute.

I’ve been thinking about songs a lot lately. It’s particularly weird as a singer/songwriter to analyze music for a big, emotional event like a wedding.  For instance- a completely lame verse in the middle of an otherwise amazing song can totally turn me off.   Sometimes the emotionality of a song’s chord structure is so powerful to me that I completely miss the horrendous word choice.

And sometimes the memory of a song is so great that you never took a minute to listen to the inappropriate lyrics  (anyone see the Arrested Development episode called “Afternoon Delight”?).  Here’s an unfortunate example of that- I was thinking about the father/daughter dance.  I remember being a kid, standing on my dad’s feet while he danced me around the room wailing an overdramatic version of the Sinatra classic “Strangers in the Night” while I giggled hysterically.  That’s my song with my dad- always makes me smile when I hear it.  When I mentioned it to Richie, he found the lyrical content slightly disturbing for a father/daughter dance.  And he’s right!!!  I’ve never noticed one lyric.  But a song about a secret torrid love affair is a little bit creepy for a dad and daughter to dance to.  Sorry pops, I know it’s gonna creep you out now, too.

I was also thinking about a non-traditional song to walk down the aisle to.  Something personal, that encapsulates our relationship and hits my heart.  I’ve got a couple ideas, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on great walk down the aisle songs because there is just not a chance in hell “here comes the bride” will be played at my wedding.

To recap your homework for the comment section of this blog, I need the following suggestions from you:

1) Good father/daughter songs

2) Unique & meaningful walk down the aisle songs

3) Oh, and some fun, right after we just got married & we’re walking out songs

Thanks guys.  Your help really does make this all easier.

Rach

PS- I just named this blog Mambo #5 so I wouldn’t be the only one with that horrendous song stuck in my head.  Sorry.

*EDITOR’S (fiance’s) NOTE:  Richie is insisting I include his clarification: “Apache from Sugar Hill Gang sucks – reminds me of Carlton! Apache from the Incredible Bongo Band is pure old school!”

  1. Best songs for walking out after a wedding: The Empire March from Star Wars and the theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. NUFF SAID!!!!!!!

  2. great post – very tough to brainstorm music for someone else’s wedding!

i just want to see pictures of the DJ who has the range of Richie to Rachel music – and video of your family dancing to Public Enemy.

    🙂

    • Yes, it should be interesting. I think we’re just gonna have to have veto power over each other’s song lists. Cause there’s only so much Beastie Boys that my grandma can dance to.

  3. Wow, really had to search through my iPod for this one. Here goes:

    1. Father/Daughter – Colour My World (Chicago) or Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Neil Young)

    2. Walk down the aisle songs – Head Over Feet (Alanis Morissette), C’Etait Toi (Billy Joel), Yours And Mine (Fountains of Wayne)

    3. Walking out songs – Wavelength (Van Morrison), Could You Be Loved (Bob Marley), Reach Out I’ll Be There (Four Tops), Everyday I Write the Book (Elvis Costello), That’s The Way (Smashing Pumpkins)

And when you decise to use all of these, I’ll expect an invite to the wedding!

  4. Hey Rachel!

Looked around a fair bit, and played some favourites to get this list (though some is new).

Not sure where you might use them, but here they are…

    [Big Names]

Queen – Made In Heaven – I Was Born To Love You
B.B. King & Eric Clapton – Riding With the King – Marry You
Jimi Hendrix – Are You Experienced? – May This Be Love
Leonard Cohen – I’m Your Man – Ain’t No Cure For Love
The Ramones – Weird Tales of the Ramones – She’s The One

    [Not So Big Names]

White Lion – Mane Attraction – Till Death Do Us Part
Pretty Maids – Planet Panic – Enter Forevermore
Mojave – Stories – Casa Rosita

A web search should put most of these within easy listening reach.

For more options, the following looks good.

Oh, I’m also all for the Star Wars Imperial March too! (Even better if you’re talking about the Metallica cover…)

    Best of luck!

  5. My wife and I have COMPLETELY opposite music tastes (Her last two shows: Sister Hazel and Kenny Chesney. Mine: Primus and Slayer). But we found common ground in some classic, agreeably awesome songs we’ve both always just happened to love, like Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe” and “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything.” “Our song” was Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck’s version of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” It took some time, but our wedding soundtrack turned out to be a killer setlist with everything we both loved.

We allowed each other two exceptions though. Hers were two god-awful country music atrocities which I couldn’t tell you the name of if you put a gun to my head, and mine were Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” and P.E.’s “Bring The Noise.” We were so proud of it, every guest got a cd at the reception. Four years later we still have people tell us they play it regularly. Even with your opposite tastes, a memorable compromise will be easier than you think. There HAS to be a handful of songs you both like when you hear them. They may not be conventional “wedding reception” songs, but who gives a rats ass? It’s about YOU and HIM enjoying yourselves together, and what you both enjoy sharing. Have fun with it and screw the norm!

    • This is an awesome perspective & solution, thanks Larry. We’re definitely going to institute the two exceptions rule.

Also, Richie loved your two picks. Sigh. lol

  6. Ok, I never really paid any attention to the words in that old Frank Sinatra song and now that I have , it really is creepy…but if you choose anything close to “Sunrise, Sunset” and tears start streaming down my face like they did at an upscale restaurant here recently, then I guarantee that I will follow this up with a request of the band (not dj as in wedding band) for Klezmer music.. or that inevitable favorite “Chacaroon” ..you choose.

    • CRAZY, RIGHT?!?! I never listened to the words either until Richie made a weird face when I mentioned that for our song!!!

No Sunrise, Sunset pops. I can easily make that promise. 🙂

  7. Matt is a WISE MAN! I am talking Yoda wise. He likes the Ramones and the Imperial March

  8. I’m 31, my husband is 33. We have been together for ten years and married for 5. Not once have we ever been to a concert together…which I find disturbing because I LOVE music. My ipod is with me at all times. He is more of a Stone Temple Pilots and Green Day guy while I like Hip-Hop, Rap, Pop, Britney, Country, etc. The only thing we agree on is Mumford & Sons and DMB….so, like you guys, we exclusively listen to Howard when we are in the car!

When it came to picking out our wedding songs, it was rough. He pretty much let me pick out all things wedding, so he was happy as long as I was happy. But having all of the “power” totally stressed me out, because picking out the wedding song is SO IMPORTANT (well at least then I thought it was) and I wanted it to be perfect. So I went with the Keith Urban song, Memories of Us. I liked the song, and it meant nothing to my husband. If he heard the song on the radio now, I bet you he wouldn’t even recognize it. Sad, I know. My childhood dream of my first dance with my husband, dancing to a song we both love, singing our hearts out, didn’t happen! And now that I look back at it, it’s not a big deal.
I guess what I am trying to say is, don’t stress too much! When you look back at the day, you will remember how much fun you had and the wedding song will only be a small part of your day.
    🙂

PS- I danced with my dad to “Somewhere over the rainbow” by that Hawaiian singer (I forget his name- it’s a cool version of the song though)!
We walked out to Rollin my Limp Bizkit (Weird choice, I know, but we both could agree for once!) and the bridesmaids and groomsmen walked out to Now that We Found Love by Heavy D.

And also, I have been to a few weddings where the Father/Daughter dance is totally inappropriate!! You think it works….but after listening to the lyrics a little closer…..not so much.
